The correct way to restore emails has always been to restore the entire library to another location then open them from the mail program. Save any missing emails and import them to your normal library.


That trying to work dynamically from backups and discovering it is not working under Catalina is NO SUPRISE at all.


You seem to be deleting emails and then needing to restore them as a regular practice. Don't!

Put emails you no longer want in an archive. store it somewhere else if no room on the local disk. Trusting Time Machine to restore mails is like trusting in the Nigerian Lottery you just won!! (IMAP type email just make sure you have enough space on the server. You should never have to delete from the server. Web mail should never be an issue).
